Korea's AI Search Is Not Just Naver — Practical AEO Across Naver, ChatGPT, and Gemini

Naver is still the most-used search channel in Korea, but ChatGPT and Gemini usage is growing fast. Each channel builds answers differently, so optimizing for only one leaves demand unseen. Based on public survey figures and what we confirmed while running our own tools, here is how to check all three together.

Korea's AI Search Is Not Just Naver — Practical AEO Across Naver, ChatGPT, and Gemini

Summary

"Can't we just focus on Naver?" More than half of Korean respondents have used ChatGPT in the past three months. Here is why Naver, ChatGPT, and Gemini cannot be treated separately, and what to check on each channel.

"Can't We Just Focus on Naver?"

It is the first reaction when AEO comes up in the Korean market. The premise that Naver is strong in Korea is still true. But whether that premise leads to "Naver is all we need to watch" is a separate question, because where users get their answers is changing.

What Public Surveys Show

According to OpenSurvey's AI Search Trend Report 2026, Naver's usage rate is 81.6%, still the highest, and it remains the number one primary search channel. It declined slightly year over year. In the same survey, 54.5% had used ChatGPT in the past three months, up about 15 percentage points from the prior year, and Gemini usage reached 28.9%, roughly three times the previous year. Among ChatGPT users, 44.7% said they also try other generative AI when an answer falls short, up 12.3 percentage points.

Naver is moving too. The Korea Herald reported on January 29, 2026 that AI Briefing was applied to more than 20% of all Naver queries.

ChannelConfirmed FigureCaveat
Naver81.6% usage, slightly down year over yearStill number one. AI Briefing applied to over 20% of queries (reported Jan 2026)
ChatGPT54.5% used in past 3 months, up about 15 ptsA usage rate, not search market share
Gemini28.9% used, roughly 3x year over yearLarge growth but a still-lower absolute level

All of these are usage rates. One person can use several services, so they differ from share. The point of this post is not "Naver is losing ground" but "users move between channels."

Each Channel Builds Answers Differently

The three channels differ in how they construct answers to a user's question. Naver shows an AI summary with source links built on its own search index, while ChatGPT and Gemini compose answers relying on each service's model and search integration. So it is natural for your brand to appear on one channel and not on another for the same question.

Here is something that needs to be said plainly. We could not find any officially published material on the criteria by which Naver AI Briefing selects sources. Most analyses out there are hypotheses based on observations by marketing agencies. That does not mean they are wrong; it means you should not follow them as a recipe. The only solid evidence is typing your core queries in yourself and recording which pages appear as sources.

What We Confirmed Working in the Korean Market

When our C³ Cube looks at Korean keyword demand, it collects the Naver Search Ad API volume ranges, Naver DataLab trends, and Google SERP as separate signals. We do this because demand takes a different shape on each channel even for the same topic. Conversely, trying to estimate one channel's demand from another channel's data produces errors. In September we found and fixed a bug in this pipeline where real Naver values were not being reflected in scores. Keeping channel-specific data distinct is easier to get wrong than it sounds.

Our AI citation measurement (SOV) system currently targets a single engine, Gemini. So we do not describe its results as "AI overall" and state on screen that it is Gemini-based. Not letting one channel speak for the whole is also the core claim of this post.

What to Check on Each Channel

ItemNaverChatGPT / Gemini
How to check visibilityEnter the query in search and check whether AI Briefing appears and which source links it showsEnter the same query and check brand mentions and cited sources
Site registrationRegister site and sitemap in Search Advisor; confirm collection is not blockedConfirm crawler access and body visibility (prerendering); for Google-family surfaces, confirm index status in Search Console
Shared requirementsDefinition sentences, question-and-answer structure, update dates, a body crawlers can read

The shared foundation is what we covered in crawler access settings, body visibility, structured data, and content refresh. It is safest to treat these as minimum conditions regardless of channel.

Why to Include Both Keyword-Style and Question-Style Queries

Korean users sometimes type short keywords into a search box and sometimes ask AI in full sentences. If you build your query set in only one form, you may mistake a difference between channels for a difference in query form. Write each intent in both a keyword form and a question form and run both on all three channels. You will see on which side you disappear.

Self-Check -- Where to Start Right Now

Pick 10 core queries and enter them with identical wording into Naver, ChatGPT, and Gemini, recording results in a table. Check structural readiness first with AEGIS Insight. That the score is a leading indicator of citation readiness and not a substitute for actual per-channel citations is explained in our AEO KPI design post.

Closing Thoughts

AEO in the Korean market is not a binary choice between Naver and global AI; it is watching the several channels users move between. That Naver is still the largest channel and that ChatGPT and Gemini usage is growing fast are both true at once. Not setting strategy from only one side's numbers is the conclusion of this post.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q.In Korea, is it enough to focus on Naver AI Briefing?

A.Hard to say yes. Naver still has the highest usage rate among search channels, but according to OpenSurvey's AI Search Trend Report 2026, the share who used ChatGPT in the past three months passed half at 54.5%, and Gemini usage roughly tripled year over year. Because users do not stick to one channel, checking only one tells you nothing about your visibility on the others.

Q.Are these figures search market share?

A.No. The figures cited are usage rates: the share of survey respondents who said they had used a given service. One person can use several services, so they sum to more than 100%, and they are a different metric from share, which would describe how much search traffic went to each channel.

Q.How does Naver AI Briefing choose its sources?

A.We could not find any official material in which Naver discloses its source-selection criteria. Most analyses in circulation are hypotheses based on observations by marketing agencies, so no single factor should be taken as guaranteeing a citation. The most reliable evidence is to type your key queries into Naver search yourself and record which pages appear as sources.

Q.Do I need to create separate content for each channel?

A.Mostly not. Foundations such as definition sentences, paired question-and-answer structure, and freshness are needed regardless of channel. But how you verify visibility and where you must register differ by channel, so the realistic approach is one body of content with checking and registration split by channel.

Q.Where should a small team start?

A.Pick about 10 core queries, type them with identical wording into Naver search, ChatGPT, and Gemini, and record in a table whether your brand is mentioned and which sources are cited. The differences between the three become visible at a glance, and it sets your improvement priorities.

How to Apply This — Step by Step

  1. 1

    Fix a core query set

Choose around 10 questions that matter to your business, including both keyword-style and question-style phrasing. Do not change the wording in later measurements.

  2. 2

Check the same queries on all three channels

Enter the same queries into Naver search, ChatGPT, and Gemini, and record brand mentions and cited sources. On Naver, note separately which queries show AI Briefing and which do not.

  3. 3

    Audit the shared foundation

Check definition sentences, FAQ structure, update dates, crawler access, and whether the body is visible to crawlers. These are minimum conditions regardless of channel.

  4. 4

    Verify per-channel registration and access

For Naver, register your site and sitemap in Search Advisor and confirm collection is not blocked; for Google-family surfaces, confirm index status in Search Console. Registration does not guarantee exposure, so treat it as a status check.

  5. 5

Re-measure quarterly with the same queries

Repeat each quarter without changing the queries and compare trends by channel. The direction of change is more reliable than any single result.
